Summary

DON'T MISS THE STANDALONE NEW NOVEL FROM JOJO MOYES, THE NO。 1 BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF ME BEFORE YOU, AFTER YOU AND STILL ME

'Alice had come halfway across the world to find that, yet again, she was considered wanting。 Well, she thought, if that was what everyone thought, she might as well live up to it。'

England, late 1930s, and Alice Wright - restless, stifled - makes an impulsive decision to marry wealthy American Bennett Van Cleve and leave her home and family behind。

But stuffy, disapproving Baileyville, Kentucky, where her husband favours work over his wife and is dominated by his overbearing father, is not the adventure - or the escape - that she hoped for。

That is, until she meets Margery O'Hare, a troublesome woman - and daughter of a notorious felon - the town wishes to forget。

Margery's on a mission to spread the wonder of books and reading to the poor and lost - and she needs Alice's help。

Trekking alone under big open skies, through wild mountain forests, Alice, Margery and their fellow sisters of the trail discover freedom, friendship - and a life to call their own。

But when Baileyville turns against them, will their belief in one another - and the power of the written word - be enough to save them?

Inspired by a remarkable true story, The Giver of Stars features five incredible women who will prove to be every bit as beloved as Lou Clark, the unforgettable heroine of Me Before You

Sweet and largely unremarkable。 Reminded me of the film Songcatcher, but more predictable and less hot。

Highly readable window into the life of female librarians in rural 1930s Kentucky。 That said, some characters are better developed than others, a few too many stereotypes and a predictable ending hinging on something I'd been waiting for them to notice all along makes it a 3-star book in my 。。。 book。 Highly readable window into the life of female librarians in rural 1930s Kentucky。 That said, some characters are better developed than others, a few too many stereotypes and a predictable ending hinging on something I'd been waiting for them to notice all along makes it a 3-star book in my 。。。 book。 。。。more

I loved this story。 Builds slowly, but the character development is wonderful as friendships between the very different women who find themselves living in the small town develop。

Joanne

Fabulous! One of those books that just has everything I could hope for。 Have read Jojo Moyes before and will certainly read her again!!

Something wrong with app - every time I try to give it a 5 star rating it goes to one star。。

Loved it!Great book, great story, love anything about the packhorse Liberians。 I’ve never read a book by this author but i will be searching for more。

I enjoyed the characters, the premise was interesting about a mobile library (we loved our mobile library in Arizona), and the comradery between the women was encouraging。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I was really enjoying this until the pregnancy plotline。 It bothers me that Moyes specifically stated that Margery was a woman who flaunted all the rules and expectations of a woman in that time period, and yet Moyes specifically had Margery (who had been adamant about not wanting a family) get pregnant to add some sort of extra sympathy just in time for her trial。 It’s disgusting and possibly anti-feminist。 A woman is worthy because she is a capable human being, whether or not she reproduces。 W I was really enjoying this until the pregnancy plotline。 It bothers me that Moyes specifically stated that Margery was a woman who flaunted all the rules and expectations of a woman in that time period, and yet Moyes specifically had Margery (who had been adamant about not wanting a family) get pregnant to add some sort of extra sympathy just in time for her trial。 It’s disgusting and possibly anti-feminist。 A woman is worthy because she is a capable human being, whether or not she reproduces。 Why is Margery’s strength and ability to love not something she’s allowed to have on her own? 。。。more

This grew on me, after what felt like a slow start。 Ultimately, a moving, celebratory story with historical roots about the courage and smarts of a team of WPA-funded librarians in rural Kentucky。

An excellently written, very moving story based on a very real group of ladies in Eastern Kentucky who carried out Eleanor Roosevelt's plan of a traveling library on horseback to widely scattered homes in the backwoods and hills。A great plot and skillful handling of that plot produced a surprise ending and I must say it was a pleasure to read overall。 An excellently written, very moving story based on a very real group of ladies in Eastern Kentucky who carried out Eleanor Roosevelt's plan of a traveling library on horseback to widely scattered homes in the backwoods and hills。A great plot and skillful handling of that plot produced a surprise ending and I must say it was a pleasure to read overall。 。。。more

Delightful book。 Story is about women who were librarians on horseback in rural Appalachia during the late 30's to early 40's。 The WPA Packhorse Librarians program was set up by Eleanor Roosevelt and I had never heard of it。 This book is a novel fictionally based on these brave women。 There is a bit too much melodrama but then who would want to just read about someone delivering books day after day。 It seems to be a popular book with mostly good reviews and i would definitely recommend it。 Delightful book。 Story is about women who were librarians on horseback in rural Appalachia during the late 30's to early 40's。 The WPA Packhorse Librarians program was set up by Eleanor Roosevelt and I had never heard of it。 This book is a novel fictionally based on these brave women。 There is a bit too much melodrama but then who would want to just read about someone delivering books day after day。 It seems to be a popular book with mostly good reviews and i would definitely recommend it。 。。。more

Perfect lockdown reading - a story that transported me to another time and another place, rural Kentucky in the 1930s。 I had never heard of the Packhorse Libraries before (an initiative of Eleanor Roosevelt's) so I found that interesting。 It is essentially a story of female friendship, peopled with a great variety of characters。 The plot is compelling and kept me up well after midnight on several occasions。 It's a good story, well told - not great literature, but really enjoyable。 It should make Perfect lockdown reading - a story that transported me to another time and another place, rural Kentucky in the 1930s。 I had never heard of the Packhorse Libraries before (an initiative of Eleanor Roosevelt's) so I found that interesting。 It is essentially a story of female friendship, peopled with a great variety of characters。 The plot is compelling and kept me up well after midnight on several occasions。 It's a good story, well told - not great literature, but really enjoyable。 It should make a terrific movie when it appears。 。。。more

I liked the unusual setting and topic and I love historical novels。 I was aware of the controversy concerning two very similar novels being published around the same time and would probably have chosen The Book Woman as being more likely to have an authentic voice。 But The Giver of Stars was selected as a book club choice so I read it quite enthusiastically。The plot unfolds well in Jojo Moyes' capable hands but I found it difficult to picture many of the characters though I was soon rooting for I liked the unusual setting and topic and I love historical novels。 I was aware of the controversy concerning two very similar novels being published around the same time and would probably have chosen The Book Woman as being more likely to have an authentic voice。 But The Giver of Stars was selected as a book club choice so I read it quite enthusiastically。The plot unfolds well in Jojo Moyes' capable hands but I found it difficult to picture many of the characters though I was soon rooting for them anyway! I found attitudes were either traditional (including modest, prejudiced and uncharitable) or were forward-thinking in a familiar post-modern way。 Neither set were really argued well or rationalised or explained in terms of character development, not in the time line before the story nor during it。 I found this frustrating and disappointing。There was considerable detail about the pack librarians' routes, tack, administration and value to the community。 It was all very welcome and I would have appreciated even more。 It is a fascinating topic so I may well read the rival novel to add to my understanding。 。。。more

Okay I was waiting for something intense to happen throughout this book but, that never really happened for me。 I guess it was the time period of the book that kept it more of a PG read。

Jennica Van Blerkom

It took me a long time to get into the story, but I grew to love the string Kentucky librarians doing the important work of delivery books to the rural mountain people。 Great read, and my first ever book club book!

Jenny

I loved this book so much。 A sprinkling of history, a great plot, and such fun characters made it just my cup of tea。

Really liked the authors style of writing。 The story flowed well and glad to have read this historical fiction (which I rarely read)。

A Librarian Must-Read!Books are powerful things and librarians are the gatekeepers of that knowledge。 This story captures the plight of horsepack librarian women。 Set in the 1930s when ladies were expected to be seen not heard, these powerful women were anything but quiet as they faced harsh elements and even harsher criticism as they served their community knowledge through books。

Katie-Lynn Morgan

Beautiful。 I loved it all, the scenery, the women, their mission。 I was intrigued by it all。

Georgie Wright

Both heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time。 The writing enabled me to really picture where this was set, but not in a boring over detailed way。 I felt for the characters, and although I didn’t cry, my heart ached for the losses, and my heart soared with happiness for them too。 Thoroughly enjoyable, felt like a small push towards classics rather than my usual thriller too!

Lizzy Miller

I really enjoyed it, though the ending seemed a bit too tidy and easy。 The characters and setting were my favorite parts。

Marisa

What a beautifully written book! It was so good that I didn’t want it to end。 The book hangover is real with this one。 One of my favorites read in 2021 and of Jojo Moyes!

Jennifer

This book started slow for me, but by the end I was invested。 I enjoyed the historical tie in about a period of time I didn’t know about。 Good book 😊

3。5 stars。 It started very slowly, and I had a hard time keeping my attention to the book。 I stuck with it, and I’m glad I did。 It was a good read, as I worried about the characters, and rooted for their successes。

Joanna Donaldson

The only other books I’ve read by Jojo Moyes were the Me Before You trilogy so this book took me by surprise being so different but what a fabulous book。 Loved the unlikely librarians and the friendship that builds between them which brings them together and makes them stronger。 A wonderful book of friendship and love。
